Volunteer in Tanzania, East Africa

Our Village and CAN AID Africa work with grassroots organizations focused on Children and Orphans and facilitates volunteer placements where few, if any, volunteers have been before!

NOTE: Due to overwhelming response from interested individuals, the deadline for the application to be submitted has been pushed up to February 28th, 2009. Student at York University who are interested in Volunteering, a new departure date will be scheduled for you once the strike is over. The date will be set approximately one-week after the completion of exams.

This new experience allows for a new, authentic and rich experience for both the volunteers and the participants.

Placements include:

  • Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools where volunteers will teach English among other things. 
  • Special-Needs Education Centers where volunteers with some experience working with special-needs children will assist the local staff on a daily bases.
  • Low-Budget Hospitals where volunteers will work as assistants with head doctors and other staff. Volunteers will conduct a number of different tasks wherever they are needed.
  • Orphanage located in the city of Morogoro, where impoverished children are housed and schooled. Volunteers will have the opportunity to initiate a number of morning, afternoon, and/or evening programs for the children whose ages range from 3—18 years. 
  • Websites Without Borders - a new initiative started by Our Village as a number of grassroots organization and institutions do not have websites, Our Village is looking for volunteers with IT experience to design and build websites for these groups. Volunteers for this program are not required to be in Tanzania. If you are interested, please

The 2009 Placements will take place in May and August. Both placements are for 2-4 weeks depending on your availability.

Volunteers for the MAY 2009 trip are expected to arrive in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania no later than MAY 7th, 2009.

Volunteers for the AUGUST trip are expected to arrive in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania no later than JULY 16th, 2009.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 17 years of age by December 31st, 2009
  • Must carry a valid Canadian, American, UK/EU passport valid for 6 month
    from time of departure
  • Must be able to commit for two to four weeks
  • Must submit a completed application form
  • Must complete and sign the declaration waiver prior to departure

Help Tanzania NOWSchool Volunteers

Program Fees

All volunteers are responsible to fundraise there fees. A fundraising guide will be provided to assist each volunteer. Fundraising is much easier than most people think and the program fees are designed specifically with "student budgets" in mind!

Program Fees Include :

  • Meals and Accommodation
  • Pre-travel orientation session in Toronto, Ontario hosted by past volunteers
  • Our Village T-Shirts
  • In-country support team
  • Airport pick up / drop off
  • Accommodation and three meals a day
  • Local transportation to placement
  • Pre-travel orientation volunteer package
  • Fundraising package to help with fundraising
  • Introductory Kiswahili Language Class
  • The Our Village Gold Star Award for contribution towards humanity
  • Reference letter

Plus Volunteers will have the opportunity on weekends or after the placement is over to engage in a number of special vacation/tourist attractions such as: (Not included in program fees)

  • Visiting the Coastal/Beach Region of Tanzania
  • Visiting historical Zanzibar Island
  • Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro
  • Overnight Safari
  • Trip to Lake Victoria (the source of the River Nile)

Fees:

  • $950 for two-week volunteer program
  • $1450 for four-week volunteer program
  • $250 for each extra week

Payment Schedule:

  • $500 dollars (refundable) after application has been accepted
  • Balance to be paid 5 weeks before the start of the placement
  • Full payment is required to confirm your participation
    Make all Cheques to CAN AID AFRICA.

    Refund Policy:
  • 100% refund if application is withdrawn in writing 4 weeks before the Program
  • 50% is refunded if application in writing 2 weeks prior

  • Travel Immunizations
  • Travel Medical Insurance

Children and youth face many challenges
where volunteers can help make a difference
in someone’s life

Children are always warm and welcoming
to volunteers in schools and orphanages

Drastically overpopulated classrooms provide
for challenging situation for volunteer teachers

Many youth speak English as their second language and attend English medium schools easing the language barrier for volunteers

Conditions of placements will vary and all
requests and requirements indicated by
volunteers will be looked after

Primary school students from poverty stricken background provide for rewarding experience

Special-need individuals were heavily marginalized in the past and institution
to help them are very new in Tanzania
